3 Continuing Education Hours

Dyan Haspel-Johnson PhD and Marvin Portner, MD

WESTWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
ROOM 108

10497 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90024

Date: Saturday, January 27, 2007

Time: Registration 8:30AM. Presentation 9 AM to Noon.

  • Overview of Workshop:
From a medical point-of-view, we will first describe the facets of fibromyalgia and go over how some its symptoms are particularly amenable to mind-body interventions like hypnosis. The interface between the immune system and hypnosis has been well documented and we will give specific techniques that we have used successfully to dramatically improve fibromyalgia symptoms including pain, sleep problems, immune response, inflammation, fatigue, etc. For over a decade we have taught self-hypnosis, using specific suggestions in the form of personalized CD’S, to help empower and heal individuals with fibromyalgia. We will go over some of the most commonly effective suggestions and techniques and our outcome experiences.

  • Objectives of Workshop:
To give participants an understanding of the diagnosis and manifestations of fibromyalgia and to describe some successful hypnotic interventions to facilitate healing in this difficult-to-treat rheumatic condition.

  • About the Presenter:
Dyan Haspel-Johnson, Ph.D. obtained her doctorate in health psychology from Sabrook Graduate School and Research Institute. She works as a therapist and has practiced mind/body hypnosis as a specialist for over 10 years in a private therapy practice, medical practice and, previously, at UCLA’s Behavioral Medicine Clinic. Dyan focuses on chronic problems (everything from fibromyalgia to phobias) with the goal of helping empower individuals to transform their weaknesses into strengths. She is the co-chair of programs for the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis. She currently works in private practice using a variety of methodologies to fit each patient, including making individualized hypnosis CD’s that people can listen to on their own as well as doing more traditional therapy sessions.

Marvin M. Portner, M.D., Board Certified in Allergy, Immunology, and in Internal Medicine trained at the University of Michigan (Phi Beta Kappa) and UCLA. Since early in 1970, Marvin has integrated holistic, alternative medicine into his traditional medical training and practice. As a private practice physician, Marvin spends time with his patients getting to know them and talking to them about their history as well as about their health concerns and decisions. Each person is treated according to his/her own needs rather than as an impersonal clinical case.
