SCSCH BASICS WORKSHOP FEBRUARY 1, 2, 3, 2008 Day 1—Friday Evening, February 1, 2008 5:30-5:45 Registration and Coffee 5:45-6:00. Welcome—Jessica Schairer, Ph.D., President, SCSCH 6:00-10:00 Introduction to Hypnosis; Fundamentals of Hypnotic Language; Demonstration and Practice. Observational Skills as well as Sensory Acuity will be emphasized.—Norma Barretta, Ph.D. and Phil Barretta, M.A., M.F.T.
Day 2—Saturday, February 2, 2008 8:30-8:45 Second Day Sign-In and Coffee 8:45-9:45 Myths and Misconceptions about Hypnosis and Basic Hypnotic Phenomenon—David Gordon, Ph.D. 9:45-10:15 Induction Demonstration and Discussion: Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Staircase of Relaxation—Barbara Freedman, Psy.D. 10:15-10:30 Break 10:30-11:15 Induction Demonstrations: Eye Roll (including Dabney Ewing’s), Eye Fixation, Eye Blink and Arm Drop. Observable Assessment—Cye Hoffman, Ph.D. 11:15-12:15 Group Supervision Practice Session 1: Introductory Induction Techniques—Gary Wood, Ph.D., LCSW, Cye Hoffman, Ph.D., Barbara Freedman, Psy.D., David Gordon, Ph.D. (Students will choose an induction technique, induce hypnosis with another student. The Student conducting the session will offer general suggestions for well-being, i.e. “You can learn new things easily; you will feel relaxed and confident, etc.” and will then re-alert the student in hypnosis. Students will give suggestions for subject to find a safe, quiet, comfortable or otherwise useful mental place. Objectives of Workshop:
Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations and supervised training in small groups, participants will: 1. Learn the basic elements of hypnosis 2. Acquire basic proficiency in self-hypnosis 3. Practice three hypnotic inductions in a supervised small group setting 4. Learn how hypnosis can be integrated into clinical practice 5. Learn how to teach patients self-hypnosis 6. Learn how to conduct a basic hypnosis session, consisting of these eight stages: a. Explain hypnosis: Explore and Correct Misconceptions b. Orient patient to hypnosis c. Hypnotic induction d. Deepening e. Deliver suggestions f. Check in with patient g. Deliver post-hypnotic suggestions h. Re-orient, re-alert the patient

About the Presenter:
Norma Barretta, Ph.D. – An internationally renowned presenter, author and clinician, Dr. Barretta is an approved consultant and fellow of ASCH as well as a diplomate of the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy. She is a member of the APA, ASCH, SCSCH and AHP and is also listed in Who’s Who Among Women in the World. An invited faculty member for the Erickson Foundation Congress, Dr. Barretta specializes in hypnotic work with medically referred patients in her Los Angeles-area based private practice. She is the Moderator of the Board of Governors of ASCH.
Philip F. Barretta, M.A., M.F.T. – An approved consultant of ASCH, Phil Barretta is a frequent faculty member of the Erickson Foundation Congress. In 1989 he received the status of Special Member by ASCH, an honorary member of the SCSCH. Phil Barretta is also a lifetime member of AHP, Phi Delta Phi and Phi Delta Kappa and is a diplomate of the International Academy of Health Care Professionals. A member of the CAMFT, he is listed in Who’s Who in the West. He is an internationally renowned presenter, author and instructor in Ericksonian hypnosis and neurolinguistics.
Barbara Freedman, Psy.D., MFT, M.Ed., is in private practice in Westlake Village, CA. She is a licensed psychotherapist, was a nationally syndicated advice columnist, a Consultant and Faculty of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, a National Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Hypnotherapy, a Diplomat with the American Psychotherapy Association, past president of the Ventura County Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and Vice President—Programs of SCSCH. Practice specialties include but are not limited to: Children and Adolescents, IBS and GI Disorders, anxiety, pain management, phobias, academic and athletic performance, smoking cessation, weight management and childbirth. David S. Gordon, PhD. Is a clinical psychologist and hypnotherapist in private practice in West Los Angeles where he works with children, adults, couples an families. He is Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA in the departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Dr. Gordon is past president of the Los Angeles Society of Clinical Psychologists and part of the teaching faculty of the Southern California Society for Clinical Hypnosis.
Dyan Haspel-Johnson, Ph.D. obtained her doctorate in health psychology from Saybrook Graduate School and Research Institute. She works as a therapist and has practiced mind/body hypnosis as a specialist for over 10 years in a private therapy practice, medical practice and, previously, at UCLA’s Behavioral Medicine Clinic. Dyan focuses on chronic problems (everything from fibromyalgia to phobias) with the goal of helping empower individuals to transform their weaknesses into strengths. She is the co-chair of programs for the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis. She currently works in private practice using a variety of methodologies to fit each patient, including making individualized hypnosis CD’s that people can listen to on their own as well as doing more traditional therapy sessions.
Cye Hoffman, PhD is a clinical psychologist and hypnotherapist in private practice in the Pacific Palisades. She is a Past President of SCSCH and an ASCH Consultant.
Ben Pomerantz, LCSW is in private practice in Los Angeles. He is on the adjunct faculty at the USC Graduate School of Social Work and in the Psychology Dept. at Mt. St. Mary’s College. He has also been a guest lecturer in the Behavioral Medicine Clinic in the Dept. of Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine at UCLA. He is past president of the Southern California Society for Clinical Hypnosis and is on their teaching faculty.
Randi Riffkind, Ph.D.
(PSY 10571) is a Clinical Psychologist and Marriage, Family,
Child Therapist (MFT 6934). She is currently the Vice President
of the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Dr.
Riffkind is in private practice in West Los Angeles and her
practice specialties include but are not limited to: smoking
cessation, weight issues, pain control, achieving personal and
professional success, anxiety, depression, relationships, issues
of singles. She has co-authored Successfully Single. For more

Jessica G. Schairer, Ph.D. (PSY 6590) is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Los Angeles, CA. She is currently the President of the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis and Chair of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association’s Health Psychology Committee. Practice specialties include but are not limited to: creative blocks and other career difficulties, health issues such as IBS and GI disorders, auto-immune diseases, chronic pain, infertility and childbirth, and anxiety, phobias, and depression. Peter Stone, DDS, teaches hypnosis for undergraduate and continuing education students at the USC School of Dentistry. He has an appointment in the Section of Behavioral Dentistry. He is also the course director for Geriatric Dentistry at an off campus satellite clinic. Dr. Stone has taught techniques and dental applications of hypnosis since 1981 for the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He was an “Approved Consultant in Clinical Hypnosis” for the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Dr. Stone has practiced in Beverly Hills since 1965.
Gary J. Wood, Ph.D., LCSW is Clinical Associate Professor at the USC School of Social Work and is in private practice in West Los Angeles. He is Past President of the Southern California Society of Clinical Hypnosis and was a recipient of the 2003 Clark L. Hull Award for Scientific Excellence in Writing on Experimental Hypnosis presented by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.
